Nepal becoming a Chinese province? 5 - Perhaps the people don't like it?

A huge crowd of Nepalese are going on the streets to protest, but now against the Maoists who are trying to paralyze the country. "We’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore". See the article with photo's at the Mikeldunham blog.

Strangely enough, Nepal is the only country in the world where people live who are still enthusiastic about communism, or even worse, maoism... Perhaps the majority of the Nepalese are finally waking up?

Of course, Nepalese have a lot of reasons to protest against a corrupt government, but with Maoism they would only go from bad to worse. I pray they will wake up to their confusion. OM MANI PADME HUM

China's bullying tactics - 18 - Sri Lanka blocked cricketers from meeting Dalai Lama

Dharamsala, May 5: Sri Lanka, a key Buddhist nation, had stopped its national cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara and another player from calling on His Holiness the Dalai Lama out of fear that a meeting would anger China, media reports said Tuesday.

"Kumar and Mahela were instructed not to visit the Tibetan leader. It was a foreign ministry directive that was issued to us, via the sports ministry," Sri Lanka cricket secretary Nishantha Ranatunga told AFP. ...
"We were made to understand that we should not upset relations with China," Ranatunga said.

Apparently cricketers are the latest security threat for China...

Big Brother steps up communication paranoia

BEIJING – China is poised to strengthen a law to require telecommunications and Internet companies to inform on customers who discuss state secrets, potentially forcing businesses to collaborate with the country's vast security apparatus that stifles political dissent.

In China, state secrets have been so broadly defined that virtually anything — maps, GPS coordinates, even economic statistics — could fall under the category, and officials sometimes use the classification as a way to avoid disclosing information.

The new draft maintains that wide scope, defining state secrets as: "information that concerns state security and interests and, if leaked, would damage state security and interests in the areas of politics, economy and national defense, among others," Xinhua said. Reports did not say what penalties for violations would be under the amended law.

But its passage is unlikely to result in a significant change as communications companies are already often compelled by powerful authorities to comply with investigations.

He and his parents were not seen for the past 15 years and there has been no clear information on their exact whereabouts and well being. Over the years the Panchen Lama’s plight has come to symbolize the crisis facing the survival of Tibet’s religious culture.

Just imagine, being an adult (assuming he is still alive) and being imprisoned for 15 years just for being yourself.

Handling help after earthquake by chasing monks away and stopping aid

Dharamsala, April 22 – Chinese government has ordered monasteries to recall their monks who have been helping in relief and rescue effort in Yushu County ... which was hit by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake on April 14, according to the Associated Press. Survivors of the deadly earthquake say the Tibetan monks helped first, bringing food, pitching tents, digging through rubble and cremating bodies.

“Now the Buddhist monks who responded first are being pushed out of the disaster area and off of state media — apparently sidelined by Beijing's unease with their heroism and influence”, reported the AP.

Yet state-run broadcasters and news agency have given scant attention to the Tibetan monks and instead highlighted the hard work of the military and the People's Army. ... local Tibetans were frustrated because the monks are still needed to help dig out the dead and perform funeral rites.

Meanwhile, Chinese authorities in Driru County have stopped 14 trucks loaded with relief materials from heading to the quake hit area of Kyegudo, said Ngawang Tharpa, an exile Tibetan with contact in the area.

I thought communism was about power to the people?

Earthquake in Shinghai Province

The heavy earthquake in Shinghai province has apparently left many hundreds of Tibetans dead, including monks and nuns, and unknown numbers wounded. It seems that many monasteries were severely damaged.
The Chinese government advertised that Chinese troops 'immediately responded with help'.

Radio Free Asia reported:

Sources in Tibet have told the National Democratic Party of Tibet that the Chinese government’s rescue teams are concentrated in areas dwelled by elites and government officials, and the ordinary Tibetans are being neglected. “The Chinese rescue workers helped mainly at official Chinese buildings that had collapsed. Residents where predominantly Tibetans live did not receive immediate help”.

Estimates by Tibetans of the death toll are considerably higher then the official Chinese numbers.

His Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa has asked practitioners to recite OM MANI PADME HUM mantras for the victims.

The International Campaign for Tibet collects donations for the Tibetans in trouble in the area.

Nepal becoming a Chinese province? 6 - The invitation of a celebration in a Buddhist monastery is enough for an angry Chinese ambassador

Please don't ask me to explain the logic of this, unless Nepal is already totally under Chinese control.

Nepal's President Ram Baran Yadav, Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala, who is also the deputy prime minister, and Culture Minister Minendra Rijal have received invitations to attend the birth centenary celebrations of the monk at a Tibetan monastery in Kathmandu.

However, the officials have distanced themselves from the Tibetan monastery under pressure from China, IANS reported.

The Tibetan monastery is celebrating the birth centenary celebrations of Dilgo Khyentse. ... This year, Shechen monasteries worldwide are celebrating the birth centenary of the monk.

The Chinese embassy in Kathmandu reportedly conveyed its anger over the invitations to Nepal's foreign ministry, saying any acceptance would be regarded as a gross violation of Nepal's avowed commitment towards China.

So apparently, Nepalese officials are not allowed to visit a religious celebration in a Buddhist monastery in their own country - or is Nepal a Chinese province?
Just imagine that the USA would forbid a Canadese official to visit a church in Canada...

By the way, Nepalese border police also arrested 17 Tibetans who fled China... Why does this remind me of Eastern Germany before the wall fell in 1989?

China's bullying tactics - 18 - University of Calgary 'punished'

The Chinese government has removed the University of Calgary from its list of accredited institutions — a move school officials say is connected to the Dalai Lama's visit last fall.

The university hosted the 1989 Nobel Peace Laureate and awarded him an honorary degree when he visited the city in September last year.

In December, officials were made aware the Chinese government had removed the university from a list posted on the Ministry of Education's website.

Now, Chinese students of the university face an uncertain future...

Strained ties between the US and China could deteriorate further if President Obama goes ahead with a meeting with the Dalai Lama, Beijing warned today.

How come the Chinese cannot see they make themselves look totally ridiculous this way? A country of over a billion people still afraid of a Buddhist monk?
