Nepal becoming a Chinese province? - 7- Arrests for doing prayers...

TOI [Thursday, July 08, 2010 12:26]

"Over 350 Tibetans were detained by Nepal police while trying to attend the prayer meeting today on the occasion of His Holiness’ 75th birthday," said a doleful Tibetan journalist, who declined to be named. "There were extraordinary security measures to deter Tibetans from attending the mass meeting and we were not allowed to pray at the traditional public Buddhist places like Boudhanath, Swayambhunath and Pharping.
...
the caretaker government sent instructions to the parliament secretariat, asking the 601 members of parliament not to attend the subdued ceremony that was held at the Jawalakhel Tibetan refugee camp in Lalitpur district. The order came after Nepal’s President, Dr Ram Baran Yadav, and Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala earlier this year accepted invitations to attend celebrations at a Buddhist monastery but were hurriedly forced to cancel them after a red-eyed Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu objected fiercely."

Religion is poison to the people according to hard-line communists; arresting them is apparently not?

From DPA [Tuesday, July 06, 2010 15:11]

Nepal police on Tuesday detained more than 100 Tibetan refugees who had gathered to celebrate the Dalai Lama's 75th birthday, but released them later in the day.

If I were to celebrate the birthday of my mother in Nepal, would they arrest me too?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOUR HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA !!!
Please remain to help us sentient beings.
We are daily tormented by suffering
Caused by our own ignorant behavior and attitude,
Please help us to reach the highest state of enlightenment.

Hao Peng's comprehension of freedom

A fascinating comment by Hao Peng, deputy Communist Party boss and deputy governor in Tibet, as quoted By Reuter June 30, 2010 (Writing by Emma Graham-Harrison, editing by Miral Fahmy) exposing his delusions:

Hao said the prohibition on his image was natural. "The Dalai Lama is not merely a religious figure, he is also a mastermind of separatist activities. No sovereign country in the world would allow the hanging of a portrait of a person like that," he said.

The blind leading the seeing?
I thought only the North Korean government could come up with such unworldly statements about freedom of expression...

Bangladeshi Tibet activist harrased

Bangladesh under pressure of Big Brother China?

According to this Blog, A Tibet activist is being harrassed by police in advance of a visit by Chginese Vice President Xi Jinping. Apparently, authorities fear that some protests may take place...

A new phase of harassment has started on Ms. Wasfia Nazreen, a blogger from this blog, and her family members. Special Branch from Bangladesh Police’s Gulshan Thana and NSI members have reportedly called and visited her and her relatives’ home over the past six days, not just in Dhaka the capital but also in her paternal village in the district of Feni.

She and her relatives have been interrogated several times during this time, in relation to her involvement with Tibetans in the past. Wasfia, who just lost her grandmother Monday June 7th morning, had requested from the authorities for some breathing time till next week. Her family will be observing the Qul at their village home on Friday, June 11th, where both SB and NSI have reached since last night. Her lawyer and friends have expressed grave concern for her family members, especially those who live in the same areas of the burial, to have to go through such unrelated questioning at these hours of grief.

... she has been completely inactive with Tibet’s work in recent times. She has repeatedly confirmed to the law-enforcing officers that she had nothing in store for the VP’s duration here, or let alone anything related to Tibet as far as Bangladesh was concerned as she is too busy working to eradicate violence against women.

Incidentally, on 13th June, the Chinese VP Xi Jinping will be visiting Bangladesh. Daily Star reported: “Official sources said the Foreign Ministry is coordinating with other ministries and law enforcing agencies, and holding meetings regularly as part of preparations for the visit and the Chinese leader will be given VVIP protocol, which is usually given to heads of state and government.” (http://www.thedailystar.net/story.php?nid=141921)

The harassment and these ‘friendly’ visits on Wasfia initially started in summer of 2008 following the publication of an article: and then took a radical leap from July 2009 onwards. An exhibition jointly organized with Drik Gallery, titled INTO EXILE: TIBET 1949-2009 was also shut down by riot-geared police, with pressure from the local Chinese Embassy in November 2009. However, the intimidation had stopped in January 2010 following an international letter-writing campaign targeting FM Dipu Moni and pressure from foreign embassies.

Welcome to China, the world-wide greatest exporter of repression and intimidation.

If you can't beat them, sell them...

China to turn Tibet into world's top tourist destination: report
Phayul [Tuesday, May 18, 2010 12:02]

Dharamsala, May 18: Chinese communist authorities have reportedly drawn ambitious plans to turn Tibet into world's top tourist destination thereby amassing total tourism revenue to the tune of 20 billion yuan (2.9 billion dollars) in the next ten years, according to media reports.

According to the roadmap, by the end of 2020, the number of annual visits to Tibet should reach 20 million and tourism revenue should reach 20 billion Yuan, making Tibet a world class tourism destination, PTI reported, citing China's state media as saying.

What most tourists these days do not realiza is that nearly all the 'beautiful old' monasteries they see had to be re-built after the Cultural Revolution razed virtually all of the them to the ground.
They also often do not realize that the Chinese force the monks to charge money to visit or photograph their monasteries, as if they are musea...
The monks are allowed to recite prayers - but only because the tourists like this.
Behind the scenes monks are often forced to study Chinese propaganda, and actual Buddhist teachings are discouraged.
Things are not always what they seem - most certainly in China these days...

Nepal becoming a Chinese province? 5 - Perhaps the people don't like it?

A huge crowd of Nepalese are going on the streets to protest, but now against the Maoists who are trying to paralyze the country. "We’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore". See the article with photo's at the Mikeldunham blog.

Strangely enough, Nepal is the only country in the world where people live who are still enthusiastic about communism, or even worse, maoism... Perhaps the majority of the Nepalese are finally waking up?

Of course, Nepalese have a lot of reasons to protest against a corrupt government, but with Maoism they would only go from bad to worse. I pray they will wake up to their confusion. OM MANI PADME HUM

China's bullying tactics - 18 - Sri Lanka blocked cricketers from meeting Dalai Lama

Phayul [Wednesday, May 05, 2010 13:47]

Dharamsala, May 5: Sri Lanka, a key Buddhist nation, had stopped its national cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara and another player from calling on His Holiness the Dalai Lama out of fear that a meeting would anger China, media reports said Tuesday.
Sangakkara was advised against paying a courtesy visit to Dalai Lama in India (Photo: AFP)Sangakkara and former skipper Mahela Jayawardene were asked not to join their Indian Premier League (IPL) teammates of Kings XI Punjab, who paid a courtesy call on the exiled Tibetan leader last month in Dharamsala, the seat of Tibetan Government-in-Exile in North India, a top Sri Lankan cricket official told media in Colombo.
"Kumar and Mahela were instructed not to visit the Tibetan leader. It was a foreign ministry directive that was issued to us, via the sports ministry," Sri Lanka cricket secretary Nishantha Ranatunga told AFP. ...
"We were made to understand that we should not upset relations with China," Ranatunga said.

Apparently cricketers are the latest security threat for China...

Big Brother steps up communication paranoia

AP [Wednesday, April 28, 2010 17:00]
By GILLIAN WONG

BEIJING – China is poised to strengthen a law to require telecommunications and Internet companies to inform on customers who discuss state secrets, potentially forcing businesses to collaborate with the country's vast security apparatus that stifles political dissent.
...
In China, state secrets have been so broadly defined that virtually anything — maps, GPS coordinates, even economic statistics — could fall under the category, and officials sometimes use the classification as a way to avoid disclosing information.

The new draft maintains that wide scope, defining state secrets as: "information that concerns state security and interests and, if leaked, would damage state security and interests in the areas of politics, economy and national defense, among others," Xinhua said. Reports did not say what penalties for violations would be under the amended law.

But its passage is unlikely to result in a significant change as communications companies are already often compelled by powerful authorities to comply with investigations.

Sad birthday

TCHRD: 25 April 2010
Press Statement on the 21st Birthday of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima” the XIth

25 April 2010: Today marks the 21st birthday of the XIth Panchen Lama: Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, one of Tibet’s most important religious leaders, who was abducted by the Chinese authorities on 17 May 1995 when he was just six years old. He and his parents were not seen for the past 15 years and there has been no clear information on their exact whereabouts and well being. Over the years the Panchen Lama’s plight has come to symbolize the crisis facing the survival of Tibet’s religious culture.

Just imagine, being an adult (assuming he is still alive) and being imprisoned for 15 years just for being yourself.

Handling help after earthquake by chasing monks away and stopping aid

Phayul [Thursday, April 22, 2010 10:57]
By Kalsang Rinchen

Dharamsala, April 22 – Chinese government has ordered monasteries to recall their monks who have been helping in relief and rescue effort in Yushu County ... which was hit by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake on April 14, according to the Associated Press. Survivors of the deadly earthquake say the Tibetan monks helped first, bringing food, pitching tents, digging through rubble and cremating bodies.

“Now the Buddhist monks who responded first are being pushed out of the disaster area and off of state media — apparently sidelined by Beijing's unease with their heroism and influence”, reported the AP.

Yet state-run broadcasters and news agency have given scant attention to the Tibetan monks and instead highlighted the hard work of the military and the People's Army. ... local Tibetans were frustrated because the monks are still needed to help dig out the dead and perform funeral rites.

Meanwhile, Chinese authorities in Driru County have stopped 14 trucks loaded with relief materials from heading to the quake hit area of Kyegudo, said Ngawang Tharpa, an exile Tibetan with contact in the area.

I thought communism was about power to the people?

Earthquake in Shinghai Province

The heavy earthquake in Shinghai province has apparently left many hundreds of Tibetans dead, including monks and nuns, and unknown numbers wounded. It seems that many monasteries were severely damaged.
The Chinese government advertised that Chinese troops 'immediately responded with help'.

Radio Free Asia reported:
Sources in Tibet have told the National Democratic Party of Tibet that the Chinese government’s rescue teams are concentrated in areas dwelled by elites and government officials, and the ordinary Tibetans are being neglected. “The Chinese rescue workers helped mainly at official Chinese buildings that had collapsed. Residents where predominantly Tibetans live did not receive immediate help”.
Estimates by Tibetans of the death toll are considerably higher then the official Chinese numbers.

His Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa has asked practitioners to recite OM MANI PADME HUM mantras for the victims.

The International Campaign for Tibet collects donations for the Tibetans in trouble in the area.

Nepal becoming a Chinese province? 6 - The invitation of a celebration in a Buddhist monastery is enough for an angry Chinese ambassador

Please don't ask me to explain the logic of this, unless Nepal is already totally under Chinese control.
Phayul[Saturday, February 27, 2010 18:48]

Nepal's President Ram Baran Yadav, Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala, who is also the deputy prime minister, and Culture Minister Minendra Rijal have received invitations to attend the birth centenary celebrations of the monk at a Tibetan monastery in Kathmandu.

However, the officials have distanced themselves from the Tibetan monastery under pressure from China, IANS reported.

The Tibetan monastery is celebrating the birth centenary celebrations of Dilgo Khyentse. ... This year, Shechen monasteries worldwide are celebrating the birth centenary of the monk.

The Chinese embassy in Kathmandu reportedly conveyed its anger over the invitations to Nepal's foreign ministry, saying any acceptance would be regarded as a gross violation of Nepal's avowed commitment towards China.

So apparently, Nepalese officials are not allowed to visit a religious celebration in a Buddhist monastery in their own country - or is Nepal a Chinese province?
Just imagine that the USA would forbid a Canadese official to visit a church in Canada...

By the way, Nepalese border police also arrested 17 Tibetans who fled China... Why does this remind me of Eastern Germany before the wall fell in 1989?

China's bullying tactics - 18 - University of Calgary 'punished'

Phayul [Friday, February 05, 2010 11:24]

The Chinese government has removed the University of Calgary from its list of accredited institutions — a move school officials say is connected to the Dalai Lama's visit last fall.

The university hosted the 1989 Nobel Peace Laureate and awarded him an honorary degree when he visited the city in September last year.

In December, officials were made aware the Chinese government had removed the university from a list posted on the Ministry of Education's website.

Now, Chinese students of the university face an uncertain future...

TCHRD realeases 2009 Annual Report on the Human Rights Situation in Tibet

On January 22, the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy released their annual report for 2009, and as expected, it's not exactly light reading.

The year 2009 was no different when it comes to violation of human rights of the Tibetan people inside Tibet by the Chinese authorities. For Tibetans inside Tibet it’s been yet another year of heightened security, repression, isolation and suppression. The year encapsulated with numbers of highly sensitive anniversaries in Chinese calendar was dealt with an iron fist. The year 2009 marked 50 years of exile for the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people.
... China outshined its notoriety as the world’s leading practitioner of death penalty, carrying out more executions than all the other nations in the world put together.
... there are hundreds of Tibetans who are still held without any charges...

Bullying nr 12 gone badly wrong - Tibetan movie becomes 'audience favorite'

From Phayul [Tuesday, January 19, 2010]

Dharamsala, January 19: ‘The Sun Behind the Clouds: Tibet's Struggle for Freedom,’ a documentary film by Tibetan and Indian filmmaker couple has been declared 'audience documentary favorite' at the prestigious 21st Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival which concluded in California yesterday.

This comes after the Chinese withdrew their movies from the festival in protest against a documentary about Tibet. Perhaps the western audience is not so easy to manipulate as the home-crowd in China?

China's bullying tactics 14 - Harassment of Tibet activist in Bangladesh

REUTERS/Andrew Biraj/File New Delhi, 14

China's bullying tactics 13 - Continued military build-up against Taiwan

China continues arms build-up despite warming ties with Taiwan: U.S.
CNA [Thursday, January 14, 2010 13:27]

Washington, Jan. 13: Although Taiwan's relations with China have improved, China has continued its military build-up against the island, which raises doubts about whether China really wants to adopt peaceful means to resolve cross-Taiwan Strait issues, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

Google finally waking up?

BBC [Wednesday, January 13]

Internet giant Google says it may end its operations in China after hackers targeted the e-mail accounts of Chinese human rights activists.

It said it had found a "sophisticated and targeted attack on our corporate infrastructure originating from China".

It did not specifically accuse China's government but said it was no longer willing to censor its Chinese site's results, as the government requires.

Google says the decision may mean it has to shut the site, set up in 2006.

Sorry for the loss in your shares, but you should not have wanted to earn money with censorship for the Chinese government to begin with.

China's bullying tactics 12 - We don't realistic like movies about Tibet, so we withdraw our movies from the festival

China's bullying tactics 11 - Obama not to have any contact with the Dalai Lama "in any form and in any name"

Phalyul reports on January 6:

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Tuesday, "We urge the U.S. to clearly recognize the severe consequences of arms sales to Taiwan and adhere to the three Sino-US joint communiques, especially the principles established in the Joint Communique on Aug. 17, 1982.”

Jiang was responding to a question on China-U.S. relations in 2010 at a regular press briefing. As the Obama administration is reportedly expected to approve the sale of arms to Taiwan early this year and as President Barack Obama prepares to meet the exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama China said it firmly opposed arms sales to Taiwan by the U.S. and any contact with the Dalai Lama “in any form and in any name.”
